Para Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

From a wheelchair,
to World Champion. ABE TAKEZO / 阿部 武蔵

Injured in 2017, I started life in a wheelchair. A year later, out of curiosity, I stepped onto a Jiu-Jitsu mat — and everything changed.
In 2025, I became the first Japanese wheelchair-using Black Belt. Two-time World Champion at Abu Dhabi.
Jiu-Jitsu is a common language that makes life more interesting.

To share

From the hospital bed,
to the top of the world.

I still remember the ceiling I stared at from a hospital bed. I never imagined that person would one day stand — sit — at the top of the world.

2017

Injury · Life in a wheelchair

An accident changed everything. One year of hospitalization.

2018

First step onto the mat — out of curiosity

After leaving the hospital, I walked into a Jiu-Jitsu academy. I couldn't do anything at first. But I felt — I belong here.

2019 — 2024

Showing up. Every day.

Training with my brothers and sisters at YAWARA and SWEEP. Rolling on the same mat as able-bodied athletes. Building my ground game.

2025

First wheelchair Black Belt in Japan

Awarded by my mentor, Master Ryozo Murata, 7th-degree Black Belt and President of SJJJF (Sport Jiu-Jitsu Japan Federation).

2025.11

Abu Dhabi · Two-time World Champion

UAEJJF World Para Jiu-Jitsu Championship — gold in K4 (Heavyweight) and K2 EXTRA (Open Weight).

2026 →

Para Jiu-Jitsu, as a common language.

Beyond the frame of "adaptive sport." A place where people connect across age, gender, nationality, and ability.

Jiu-Jitsu is a common language
that makes life more interesting —
across age, nationality, and ability.

Mission
To become a Para Jiu-Jitsu instructor — to make a place where anyone can begin.
What I'm hoping for
Training partners, students, a toast in a far country.
And — someone to find life interesting alongside me. Open to a beautiful connection, regardless of where you're from or how you move.

"I can do this too."
Take the first step here.

Common questions. If anything is on your mind, message me directly.

Can I really do Jiu-Jitsu in a wheelchair?

Yes. I'm living proof. Jiu-Jitsu is fought on the ground — even without standing, even without leg movement, the upper body and the mind can build a complete game. Some classes are done in the wheelchair (standing class), others on the mat — the format adapts to your body.

I'm a beginner with no athletic background. Is that OK?

More than OK — beginners are welcome. I started from zero too. The first sessions begin slowly: stretching, basic movements, and safe ways to fall and move on the ground.

Can I participate with any disability?

Spinal cord injury, limb difference, visual or hearing impairment — practitioners around the world are training with all kinds of conditions. We'll find a safe and enjoyable way to train together. Reach out beforehand.

I don't have a Gi. What about cost?

Most academies offer a free trial with a Gi rental included. Costs vary by academy — I'll tell you the details when you reach out.

Where can I start?

I can introduce you to YAWARA JIU-JITSU ACADEMY and SWEEP (Tokyo). For other regions of Japan — and around the world — I can connect you with welcoming academies near you.

I want to talk to you directly.

Send me a DM on Instagram. Both Japanese and English are fine. Mention that you saw this site — it makes me happy.

Can I reach out about things other than Jiu-Jitsu?

Of course. Life talk, poker advice, the best shisha spots in Tokyo.
——and if a beautiful connection happens to be on your mind, that's welcome too. I'm keeping my heart open.

Para Jiu-Jitsu — with you,
around the world.

Open to inquiries from individuals, academies, media, and organizations worldwide. Talks, demonstrations, interviews — let's connect.
